FULL TITLE:  The Honour of Ampthill - Coroner's Buckinghamshire Notebook 1854-1878.

This booklet contains a transcription of some of the records kept by the Coroner for the Honour of Ampthill relating to inquests held in Buckinghamshire.  Each entry contains at least the date of the inquest, the name of the deceased, the parish in which the inquest was held and the verdict.  Most entries also contain the age of the deceased and some include the deceased's relationship to other named persons.  Also included in the notebook are details of deaths where an inquest was refused.  These usually contain the date of death, the name and age of the deceased, the relationship of the deceased to other named persons, a report of circumstances leading to the death and the name of the person who reported the death.  The final part of this publication includes some contemporary newspaper reports relating to some of the deaths.  Mostly these have been extracted from The Bucks Herald and other newspapers held at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies in Aylesbury and range from a two line entry found in the 'Death Notices' to almost two columns. Buckinghamshire parishes within the Honour were Bow Brickhill, Great Linford, Little Brickhill, Little Linford, Moulsoe, Newport Pagnell, North Crawley, Swanbourne, Stewkley and Wavendon.

The Poll Tax of 1694 was levied in order to fund a 'vigorous' war against France.  The basic rate, paid by most individuals aged sixteen and over, was four shillings per annum and was collected in four quarterly instalments.  This booklet contains a transcription of the lists of eligible persons within each parish and the amount they were to pay.  For some parishes this same list was used when collecting subsequent instalments, being suitably amended to include newcomers and exclude those who had left the parish or died.  Other parishes made supplementary lists of persons added and removed since the previous collection for each of the subsequent quarters.  Stoke Hundred comprises the Buckinghamshire parishes of Datchet, Denham, Eton, Fulmer, Hedgerley, Horton, Iver, Langley Marish, Stoke Poges, Upton cum Chalvey, Wexham and Wraysbury.  With the exception of Eton (with Eton College) all parishes are included in this transcription.
