This booklet contains a list of those men chosen by ballot to serve in the Oxfordshire Militia in 1831 together with the parish, or group of parishes, for which they were to serve.  Where the balloted man did not serve the name of his substitute is included.  The age and classification is given of all men who enrolled.

FULL TITLE:  Oxfordshire Light Infantry 1st and 2nd Volunteer Battalions - Nominal Roll 1892.

This booklet contains a transcription of the nominal roll of the 1st. and 2nd. Volunteer Battalions of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry taken on 1st. November 1892.  It gives name, rank, regimental number, company and date of enrolment of all those then serving.  Also included is the name, rank, regimental number, date of enrolment and date and reason for discharge of all those who had left throughout the year.

This booklet contains a transcription from one of the registers created by the Clerk of the Peace for the county, recording the names of persons licensed to sell ale.  Also included is information from similar volumes for the City of Oxford and the Boroughs of Chipping Norton and Woodstock.

FULL TITLE:  The Parish of Stonesfield - 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831 Census.

The survival of all four of the census returns, or population surveys, made for a specific town or village following their introduction by the act of 1800 is unusual.  Also unusual is the inclusion of the names of all persons in a household, but such is the case in the 1831 return for the Oxfordshire parish of Stonesfield.  This booklet contains a transcription of the names contained within the four census returns together with a map of the parish and a brief description of the slating industry with which the parish has been associated for centuries.

FULL TITLE:  Oxfordshire Central District - Coroner's Notebook 1877-1905.

This booklet contains a transcription of a notebook created by the coroners for Oxfordshire Central District listing those persons upon whose death an inquest was held between 1877 and 1905.  The purpose of the notebook is unknown but it may have been an index to further records which have not survived.  The names are arranged alphabetically by initial letter of surname, then chronologically within each letter of the alphabet.  Each entry contains, at least, the date of the inquest, the name of the deceased, the parish in which the inquest was held and the verdict or cause of death.  Most entries also contain the age of the deceased and some include the deceased's relationship to other named persons.  The exact area covered by the Oxfordshire Central District is not known but some indication can be obtained from the content of the notebook.  Inquests were held on persons in Launton and Bicester in the north, Eynsham and Cassington in the west, Culham, Clifton Hampden and Dorchester in the south and Wheatley in the east.  With the exception of a few inquests held at Oxford Prison there are no records within the notebook from the City of Oxford as this was a separate District with its own coroner.

FULL TITLE:  The Goring Heath Charity - Scholars, Apprentices and Almsmen 1737-1927.

This booklet contains a transcription of the surviving registers and lists relating to the scholars and almsmen.  Although not strictly a register of admissions and discharges the volume which lists the boys who were clothed on a regular basis also includes notes of those who left and those who arrived in their stead.  This volume provides an almost complete list of scholars from 1737 to 1807.  Further volumes record apprenticeship indentures from 1786 to 1834, 1871 to 1874 and 1884 to 1900.  The list of almsmen commences with those in the House in 1742 and continues until 1927.  The Charity was established by the will of Sir Henry Alnutt for the benefit of poor children and men from the parishes of Cassington, Goring and South Stoke [all Oxfordshire] and Ibstone [Buckinghamshire].

FULL TITLE:  Bletchingdon District - Census of Schoolchildren 1877.

This booklet contains a census of children under the age of fourteen years taken in June 1877 for the Bletchingdon District of the Bicester Union.  The records are arranged by parish and give the name of the child, the name of the child's parent (or head of house) and his or her occupation, the age and date of birth of the child, the manner and place of education and Standard achieved.  The Bletchingdon District comprised the Oxfordshire parishes of Ardley, Bletchingdon, Bucknell, Charlton on Otmoor (with the hamlets of Fencott and Murcott), Chesterton, Fritwell, Islip, Kirtlington, Lower Heyford, Middleton Stoney, Noke, Oddington, Somerton, Souldern, Upper Heyford, Wendlebury and Weston on the Green.

FULL TITLE:  Dr. South's Charity School, Islip - Volume One - Apprentices 1717-1900.

Dr. South's Charity School was established in Islip in 1710 by Robert South D. D., Rector of the parish, for the education of twenty one poor boys of Islip or nearby parishes in reading, writing and accounts.  Prior to the founding of the school, Dr. South set up a trust in 1704 for apprenticing two poor children of Islip each year and in 1712 he provided that each year part of the endowments of his school should be set aside to apprentice two or three boys, preferably scholars at his school.  Dr. South's Charity Account Books, where the amounts paid as apprentice fees have been recorded, usually with the name of the apprentice and sometimes with the name of the master, provide an almost unbroken list of those who were apprenticed between 1717 and 1900.  To supplement this a large number of apprenticeship indentures have survived with details of the trade the boy was apprenticed to and the duration of the apprenticeship.

FULL TITLE:  Dr. South's Charity School, Islip - Volume Two - Admissions and Discharges 1800-1888.

Dr. South's Charity School was established in Islip in 1710 by Robert South D. D., Rector of the parish, for the education of twenty one poor boys of Islip or nearby parishes in reading, writing and accounts.  This volume, the second of two relating to Dr. South's Charity School, contains details of pupils entering and leaving the school between 1800 and 1888.  In some cases the boy's age is given and there are sometimes remarks concerning their conduct.  There are lists of boys on the Foundation from 1872 and names of those apprenticed.

FULL TITLE:  Bullingdon Petty Sessions - Volume One - Bastardy Cases 1841-1857.

This volume contains a collection of the bastardy entries recorded in the Petty Sessions Minute Books for the Bullingdon Division of Oxfordshire in the period 1841 to 1857.  Each entry contains the date of the hearing, the names of the mother and putative father, the child's sex and date of birth and the salient points arising from the hearing.  The names of witnesses have also been included.  Bullingdon Division encompassed an area to the east and south of Oxford and includes the parishes of Beckley (including Horton cum Studley and Stow Wood), Chislehampton, Clifton Hampden, Cowley, Cuddesdon (including Denton and Chippinghurst), Culham, Dorchester, Drayton St. Leonard, Elsfield, Forest Hill, Garsington, Great Milton, Headington, Holton, Horsepath, Iffley, Little Milton, Littlemore, Marsh Baldon, Marston, Noke, Nuneham Courtenay, Oxford St. Clements, Sandford on Thames, Stadhampton, Stanton St. John, Summertown, Tetsworth, Thame, Toot Baldon, Waterperry, Waterstock and Wheatley.

A transcription of the Poll of the Freemen of the City of Oxford for two representatives in Parliament taken in July 1802.  It lists the names of the Freemen, their abode, occupation and the candidate(s) for whom they voted.  There is also an appendix listing those who did not vote.
